Littlerock sees new, familiar faces racing for Council seats This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press Monday, October 12, 2009. By JULIE DRAKE Valley Press Staff Writer LITTLEROCK - New and familiar names will be on the Nov. 3 ballot for Littlerock Town Council. The candidates - Bill Guild, Jeffrey Hillinger, Wendey Lentz, Cleta Smith and Dennis Tetu - introduced themselves to members of the community at the council's Oct. 8 meeting. Hillinger is known by many in the community as Moldy Marvin and for his Kuston Kulture Extravaganza car shows. "I'm a community member and I get involved," Hillinger said. He said he has been paying attention to the ongoing controversy over amendments to the area's Community Standards District and that he would like to see the Town Council move on to other things. Hillinger said the council needs to pay attention to areas such as children's programs, the Littlerock Library, raising money for the Town Council, and ensuring that Caltrans sticks to its plans for the community, which include widening Pearblossom Highway. "We all have something in common; we all live in this community," Hillinger said. "When we disagree we have to agree to disagree." Lentz, who has lived in the community since 1992, said that she is running for a seat on the council because she wants to get involved. "I would like to help out," Lentz said. "I would love to help out with the issues that concern all of the residents up here to keep the rural community." Lentz said that she would investigate all sides of an issue before making any decision. Smith has lived in the Antelope Valley since she was in the fifth grade. "I've moved around, now I live in Littlerock," Smith said. "My thing with wanting to be on the Town Council is, you need people that have an open mind and who are willing to listen to both sides of an issue." Guild, a former council president who resigned from his post in September, 2008, with one year remaining, said he is running for a seat on the Town Council to finish was started 10 years ago. He has been on and off the council since 1996. "A comprehensive CSD document that supports rural regions and provides all residents a maximum level of individual freedom of pursuing their own interests on their own land," Guild said. "We need the help of everyone in the community to do that." Guild also listed a variety of areas that he would pursue if elected, such as ensuring the Pearblossom Highway widening project is complete, working with local merchants to ensure compliance with community standards, and working with county agencies to expand Everett Martin Park. Tetu, also a former council president, has been on and off the council since 1993 for about 13½ years experience. "We need change," Tetu said. He said there are a lot of issues facing the community, including the expansion of Pearblossom Highway. jdrake@avpress.com |
